The Treespooners
Finn, a troubled teenager from a broken home. Sofia, an environmentalist on the Model UN team. Oscar, a boy scout with a dad on the police force. Tonya, a 7th grader with a hyperactive imagination. These kids have nothing in common with each other, with one exception: Blackstone Woods. A cozy forested area along the outskirts of their suburban Pennsylvania town. To their parents, it’s a worthless, disused scrap of overgrown land. To them, it’s a gathering place, an oasis of calm, a hiking spot, a place to roam free. When the land is bought up by a developer who plans to demolish it and build a gated community, these misfit kids come together to stand up for themselves and the trees.
What does “saving the planet” look like to a generation that will never own their own homes, let alone have a say in what happens to a bunch of trees and squirrels? What is even the point in standing up to a bully who owns everything, when you have nothing?
The Treespooners is a young adult coming-of-age story about environmental direct action. Manuscript currently in progress.
